Veteran Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh has been laid to rest in a cemetery in occupied East Jerusalem, three days after she was fatally shot by Israeli forces while reporting on a raid in the occupied West Bank.

Thousands of people gathered for Abu Akleh’s funeral on Friday, including family, friends, and those who only knew Abu Akleh as a mainstay for 15 years in Al Jazeera’s coverage of the occupied Palestinian territories and the lives of everyday Palestinians.

Some mourners held Palestinian flags and chanted “Palestine, Palestine”. The coffin was then moved from St Louis French Hospital, occupied East Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, to a funeral at Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem’s Old City, and finally to Mount Zion Cemetery where Abu Akleh was buried alongside her parents.

Lina Abu Akleh (niece) recalled her aunt’s “commitment and love for people in making sure people know the truth .”

“She knew how much she was loved, but she was so humble, she never wanted to be at the centre of attention,” she said. She would have been proud to see the support she received from the Palestinian people and her family .

Father Fadi Diab was the priest who performed the funeral and told Al Jazeera Abu Akleh’s death would have an “influence all over the globe”.

“Shireen Ab Akleh was a messenger to Palestinians and their rights,” he stated. “Life is sacred, and we are not permitted to kill it.” God made life to be nurtured .”

” If someone thought that Shireen’s influence would cease, he replied. “She will now have influence all around the world .”

Throughout the three days of memorials preceding the burial, constant reminders about the Israeli occupation that Abu Akleh reported so many times loomed.

Israeli police entered the Al Jazeera veteran’s home on Wednesday, hours after she was killed, removing a Palestinian flag and telling mourners to turn down patriotic music.

On Thursday the journalist who was killed was laid to rest at the Presidential Palace of the Palestinian Authority. On Thursday her brother was summoned from Israel by authorities, warning him against carrying Palestinian flags and chanting pro-Palestinian songs during the memorial ceremonies.

On Friday, Israeli forces attacked mourners trying to walk alongside Abu Akleh’s coffin in occupied East Jerusalem.

In shocking footage broadcast live on Al Jazeera Israeli forces beat mourners including those carrying Abu Akleh’s body. It almost caused them to drop their coffin.

Israeli troops later smashed the window in the hearse carrying Abu Akleh and took a Palestinian flag.

Lina Abu Akleh recounted the event, saying Israeli forces “just stormed in, and they were beating up everyone, i
