According to a survey that was taken between 1999 & 2014, in which respondents were asked how often they had sex each year, the average number has been decreasing over time. However, Rena Malik , a sex educator and urologist , explains that it is not as easy as saying that people have less sex.

“Specifically what they found was that the people who were decreasing the most were people in their midlife who had school-age children,” says Malik. It makes sense that there are children to care for, people to work, and it can be exhausting managing your household while also making time for intimacy. She also acknowledges that some people have children later than they used to. This means that parents might be unable to maintain sex with their children because of age-related reasons ..

This study also considers people who don’t have long-term partners and those who have long-term partners but not necessarily having sex. Malik suggests that this may be due in part to a technological and cultural shift since 1999:. There are more entertainment options now than ever 20 years back. She adds that there has also been a decline of happiness and rise in depressive symptoms.

Interestingly, while studies in other countries like the United Kingdom and Australia have also found that frequency of sex seems to be decreasing, people also appear to be broadening their “sexual repertoire’ with sex toys and masturbation to feel fulfilled without the need for a sexual partner.
